Sodexo Thailand launches “WasteWatch" Project with a goal of reducing global food waste by 50% in 5 years

  • Jan. 29, 2021

Sodexo, a local unit of the France-based global leader in food and integrated facilities management services for improving the quality of life, launched the "WasteWatch" Project to confront the food waste issue with a goal of reducing the amount of food waste in Thailand and across the world by 50% in 2025.

This project is a close collaboration with Leanpath Inc., a group of businesses that meets the highest standards of verified social and environmental performance. We are committed to preventing daily food waste in the world’s kitchens to meet the needs of customers with cutting-edge technology and applications.

Sodexo Thailand has started the “WasteWatch” pilot project with our customers in 7 locations including leading hospitals and international schools. It not only helps manage and reduce food waste in these organizations, but also supports the government’s Food Waste Management Project, which shares the same goal of achieving sustainable food waste management.

"Today one-third of the food produced in the world has become food waste, and 8% of the greenhouse gas emissions are generated from daily food waste. As a leading food service provider, Sodexo has been aware of this global issue and is trying our best to fight against food waste while there are those who are suffering from hunger. We implemented the “WasteWatch” project as soon as we could for our customers all over the world. At the same time, we are determined to maximize our services for customers and consumers as well as keep track of the amount of food waste in places that we offer our services. After that we will release these numbers to the public as a way to promote our work efficiency."

"The "WasteWatch" Project can raise the campaign awareness and manage food waste efficiently for our customers. In addition, it can help customers in several aspects including reduction of cost, global warming, world hunger, and providing guidelines for appropriate business practices. Since this project is new to food services, our team of chefs, nutritionists, and management experts need to be trained and supported to have a creative mindset according to our work plan and avoid serving food that can increase food waste. The guidelines of the “WasteWatch'' project can prevent food waste by an average of 50%. The Sodexo team can collect data regarding daily food waste in each kitchen quickly and easily as well as thorough in-depth information. This allows them to understand the situation and change their practices and behavior accordingly to achieve the goal of preventing avoidable food waste in the kitchen or from consumers."
